my girlfriend and i went to the patio during valentines weekend. we found it very welcoming, warm and homely. the staff looked after us very well and knew the menu including all the speacials off by heart.
the food itself was exceptional and reasonably priced only thing we missed was a nice bottle of prosecco
i think it's as close to being in italy without being in italy
we'll definatley be going back next time we're in edinburgh

I am a regular visitor to this restaurant when in Edinburgh. Always excellent, very warm welcome from the staff, some of whom have been there for ever, and huge choice if dishes at very reasonable prices.
I just wish we had something similar to us here in The Cotswolds -go to The Patio for a true feast of food and a great time.
Hope to be back very soon

As a group of 15 we had a lovely dinner at the Patio. The service was excellent - attentive with lots of humor. One of us had a contest going with the waiters about naming Italian football players- they really seemed to enjoy that!
The food was even better -a fantastic choice -all fresh and delicious, and every single one of us was happy with their choice. A truly memorable evening - would go back anytime possible.Sadly it is a long way from Norway.

The Patio Restaurant is our favourite place to eat in Edinburgh. It has become a family tradition to visit at least once a month (usually more!) to enjoy the delicious food and very friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
The staff are efficient and provide excellent service. The value for money is excellent (particularly the set lunch) and the quality of food is fantastic. The restaurant itself is long and narrow but has the character of authentic Italy with ambience to match.
The loveable Carmela runs a slick show with charming Mimmo in charge in the kitchen. Gino, their son, is charismatic and amiable.... he helped teach one of my daughters how to walk in the restaurant! and Head Waiter Jimmy is always cheerful and willing to help even after reeling off the long list of mouth watering seafood specials that the Patio always have for devouring. Occasionally, the beautiful Giovanna comes in to help and that is a pleasure for all.
Delicious food, Great Experience ....worth a visit soon!

Just back from having a fantastic meal at the Patio. This restaurant has to be if not the best, then certianly one of the best in Edinburgh and their ever changing list of specials and choice of fresh seafood is awesome. Family run, great banter, excellent value and 1st rate authentic Italian cuisine. Top marks

Mr Gray's comments appear elsewhere dated November, 2006. I cant agree with his comments about either food or staff. Have often eaten there and never been disappointed.

"We ate at The Patio, Hanover St, Edinburgh on Saturday.
A strange long, thin restaurant interior, and a décor that was in need of a serious makeover some years ago, but didn’t get it.
We waited too long for drinks, and finally the order to be taken.
Having waited, we asked twice for an update on when our food would arrive. Especially when others were arriving after us, and getting their food quickly.
Finally ... the garlic bread was disappointingly simply sliced crusty bread with thinly spread oiling butter - and no hint of garlic.
My pizza (specially ordered as extra hot version of their special "The Patio Pizza") ... was so perfectly round, with a perfectly rounded crust, that it looked suspiciously like frozen dough ... drowned in over the top mozzarella, and little else - very disappointing!
My wife ordered the "special giant prawns" in pasta. She commented that they were cold and over cooked.
We both only managed to eat half of the main course, and were disappointed. We are not fussy, but when it can be cooked better at home, its not right! In the same way as when asked, if the food is good, say so, when its not, the restaurant should be keen to get feedback, and then learn from it.
So it was with great surprise when we got the reaction we did to our minor feedback.
We asked for the manageress. I explained briefly that I felt the pizza was not the best, and that my wife was disappointed by cold, rubbery, over cooked prawns.
We left the middle of restaurant in total shock that any owner could react rudely to feedback, to a customer who clearly had had a bad experience."

My wife and I took our two children to The Patio on the last night of our mini holiday in Edinburgh as a special treat - we used to make a point of always dining there before our children arrived. And what a treat - everything was just as perfect as it used to be 10 - 15 years ago - & the same staff - amazing!. Mouthwatering sea-food, excellent service, " Mr Memory " the waiter who reeled of goodness knows how many specials. This is a special litle restaurant; cosy, welcoming, excellent food, the perfect place for a memorable dining experience.

The Patio seemed rather small and quaint from the outside, however within was a Tardis like spacious interior which nevertheless had a lovely cosy and charming atmosphere. The staff were wonderfully courteous and attentive and the menu (plus a huge list of available specials) was mouthwatering. I opted for seafood and it really was superb - oysters followed by charcoal grilled swordfish - absolutely delicious, I seriously recommend this restaurant, particularly if you love fresh seafood. A truly lovely dining out experience, I can't wait to return.
