Maison Bleue

My girlfriend and I popped in for lunch on Sunday afternoon and had a wonderful time. The restaurant is in a lovely building on Victoria Street with original stonework and arches and is decorated with a stylish and suble Moroccan'esque theme making for a classy but cosy atmosphere. We were shown through to the restaurant which was probably two thirds full and the waiter whisked away our coats and shopping bags and showed us to a lovely table in the corner.
We ordered a bottle of wine (Kleine Zalze Chenin Blanc - excellent and great value, especially for those of us used to paying London mark-up's !) and the two course lunch menue for c. £9.50 each. My salad of warm chorizo and poached egg was excellent, as were my girlfriends mussels and the chicken tagine and saddle of rabbit that followed were also superb. We shared a strawberry cheesecake for desert which if memory serves added just £1.90 to the bill !
The service throughout was helpful and efficient but not rushed and the atmosphere was buzzy but relaxed, just what we were after. The bill came to £40 with service which was fantastic value given the overall quality of the food and surroundings.
Highly recommended !

Fantastic food, wonderful staff, friendly, knowledgeable, professional but good humoured, very nice selection of wines, including a very tasty house malbec, and very nice atmosphere and decor. booked for a 60th birthday party at short notice, table time changed a few hours before we were going to turn up at our behest and yet still they managed to find us a lovely table as i'd asked, to make the birthday that extra bit special. looked for a long time at restaurants to go to and very glad i chose this one: first class. price was reasonable too for what we had. 3 starters, 3 mains, 3 desserts, half a dozen drinks and it was around the £100 mark. very good location too, around the corner from Grassmarket and the Royal Mile, so perfectly placed to carry on your night elsewhere or get a cab home. I will return!

I hope I will have another opportunity to return to this restaurant, and will recommend it wholehartedly to my friends and family.
We turned up without reservation of Friday night. A party of 6 at 10 pm!! However, this did not cause major problem, we just had to squeeze around the table for 5!
Everything was dealt with efficiently and professionaly. The restaurant has warm, cozy atmosphere, much needed on a cold October night!
The food was excellent, the wine fantastic (I drank Pinot Grigio rose). Service friendly, quick and helpful. Price very reasonable.
Could you please open something similar in London?

We will, without doubt, be returning to Maison Bleue!
On our first trip to Edinburgh, following an indulgent afternoon learning of the cities historic past, we sauntered through the old town looking over restaurant menu's, hoping not to be disappointed by a microwave meal and curly fries for a giant scam of £8.95. Each restaurant we seemed to peer into (on a Sunday evening) appeared to be empty of diners, apart from one...Maison Bleue. Tucked away on one of the old streets leading up from Grassmarket, and a few steps down from the Royal Mile.
Once inside we parked ourselves on the comfortable Morrocan-esque seating area and ordered a beer a piece whilst looking through their well thought out Menu. Once seated at our table in the candlelit dining area, we placed our order, I opted for the fillet steak with a peppercorn sauce and could not fault it, cooked to perfection and presented on a stack with gratin vegetables and fondant potatoes complementing one another perfectly. My partner opted for the Rib-eye steak with an extra side order of mashed gruyere potatoes (just no filling him) and couldn't have had more praise for his dish either. We ordered a bottle of full-bodied red wine which came served at the right temperature to fully enjoy it with our meal. We have one thing to say...TRY MAISON BLEUE.

We tried to get into ther Steak and Mussels place but it was full so walked into Maison Bleue. it was busy so thought we were in for a good meal It seemed atmospheric and a good start to our short break in Edinburgh. We waited a fair time to order and receive drinks but accepted that as we had not booked. When the starters came after say 40 mins we were very dissapointed but nothing bad enough that warranted a complaint.
When the main course arrived however and this is not a cheap restaurant, I could not eat it. and could not understand how they could mess up so badly. The plates were cold the food was cold, non descript sauce which should have been a very easy creamy peppered sauce on a t-bone steak, cmon folks there must only be 45 covers at the most!
So they discounted my meal and gave us 20% off, so for three starters and a bottle of wine the bill was £55.00 Yes I am sure they were concerned, but they need to do some work on the chef or the menu or perhaps both..........

Such a disappointment, they had clearly massively overbooked so we didn't sit down to our table until after 11pm when our reservation was for 9.30pm. Struggled to get a drink whilst waiting in the bar as staff were so stretched. The starters were ok when they eventually came; main course arrived half an hour later (after 11.30 at this point and past eating), my tuna steak had to be sent back twice as it was raw, not even seared. Other mains quite unimpressive given the cost. Whole evening was a shambles, our bill was completely wrong, not a nice atmosphere, many people complaining, simply because of greedy management over booking. Waiting staff did the best they could and were very obliging when we could get their attention, but otherwise appeared to give the restaurant a wide berth to avoid all the customer complaints. Not recommended.

We stumbled across this restuarant whilst meandering around Edinburgh, and I remembered seeing their website so we took a chance...... and all I can say is wow. The food and service were top notch, particulaly the sticky toffee pudding, and the decor and ambience of the restaurant was lovely. A treasure we will definitely be returning to.
