Muang Thai

Back for a second visit with some friends from out of town - took the risk of recommending Muang Thai over the initially proposed Dusit but it paid off.
Excellent Dom Yam Gung was the choice of two two to start - good chilli strength to clear the tubes whilst the others sharing some mixed starters over which I didn't hear any complaints.
For mains we shared jasmine rice with a beef penang, and a prawn green curry; some pad thai, a mixed seafood thai salad and a whole sea bass from hotter "thai originals" part of the menu which all enjoyed as came already filleted (which can put off some otherwise).
Pretty much everything was eaten, the sea bass, the salad and the penang curry (just the right consistency) being judged particularly good.
Portions are generous and flavouring makes less concession to western palates than many Thai places in the West - which was what we were looking for. Service was a mix of Thai and Scots, friendly and relaxed, so if you want fawning, exclusively Thai, waitresses this is probably not the place to come.
Wine least wide ranging but a little higher marked up than some - as I am of the school that Singha beer is the best accompaniment to Thai food that was not of too much concern.
The bill, with beers and two bottles of wine but no coffees, come to about £190 including service for five of us. Probably 10-15% more expensive than some other Edinburgh options but I would go back as I think the quality and authenticity is worth the premium.

On a visit from London, dinner in Muang Thai was a welcome escape from a rainy day. At first I baulked a little at the prices - there seemed to be about £3 added to the equivalent dishes in London. But it all came to just under £25 for 3 courses + beer, which I didn't think was too bad, especially as it was all good.
I started with some very tasty pork skewers, although it was a shame they were served with bog-standard chilli dipping sauce from a bottle - a freshly made nom pla/cucumber/peanut dip would have bene far better. My main was a highly spiced chicken red curry, on the menu with a clutch of other dishes carrying a warning that some may flinch at the strong flavours. Craving something different from the all-too-average Thai, I was happy with my choice - it was very punchy and delicious. I had coconut custard for dessert, all too rarely seen on UK menus. The service was efficient. When in Edinburgh, I'd definitely come back to Muang Thai.

Absolutely fantastic, as an avid lover of Thai food, Muang Thai is up there with the best. This was my 2nd visit here and the food, service and atmosphere were all top notch. On my next visit to Edinburgh, i am sure to come to Muang Thai again.

I just had lunch there with my boyfriend and their 7.95 lunch special is full of false advertising, charging us an additional 4.00 for prawns etc. I spoke to the manager and he told me to 'get lost and never come back to the restaurant'. Not exactly my idea of a nice lunch. There are plently other Thai restaurants to go to Edinburgh where there is exceptional customer service. We will never eat there again.

Having eaten at Muang Thai on average once per month over the last year my wife and I have never been let down. The food, service and setting has always been perfect. Even when I phone to book I feel made welcome by the pleasant mannerable response and on the last two occasion Mai Mai has taken our booking and even when we arrive at the restaurant the waitress remembers us. At no time have I had need to complain and I will certainly be booking up for next month again. Keep up the good work. 10/10.

Well with regards to the past comments in Mung Thai. I think they have got it totally wrong
Food Fantastic, Service Exellent, we have never been rushed Vegetarian's are well catered for.
I have however witness a very rude customer and they where just trying to bump a BIll.
I have been to Thailand and I agree with some of the other comments this is
the best place for Thai Food apart from Thailand.
I have visited other places in Edinburgh and MUNG THAI IS AMAZING
People who Complain annoy me. Why be so negative.

I visited Muang Thai on Sunday the 4th of May, 2008.
We were in a rush to get to a show so decided to go for something quick and decided on a dish that we both love 'Tom Yung Goong'.
As most Thai food lovers we eat if often and have done for years and with our recent trip to Thailand over Christmas we were very excited about the thought of spoiling ourselves to our most loved cuisine.
I always thought that if the Tom Yung Goong was good that it was a good sign that the rest of the food to follow was going to be a treat. Let’s just say thank goodness we only ordered the soup.
The Tom Yung Goong was the worst I have ever tried! It was oily! The three prawns didn't taste fresh, no sign of chilli, coriander, galangal or anything else that resembles the dish, only a few prawns and a couple of button mushrooms!
It was so tasteless that I will never try the restaurant again

The best place for Thai food in Edinburgh by far. We have been going there from the day they opened when we stumbled upon it by accident. The food is superb, the atmosphere is just right (and even better since the no smoking ban came in), the staff are so friendly and the service has always been spot on. Have never been rushed either during or after our meal. It is not the cheapest but you get what you pay for - excellent freshly cooked food. Well worth it - highly recommended.
