New York Steam Packet

I was taken here by a friend who promised a fun filled atmosphere with great service and excellent food........I was not let down. The small but perfectly formed restaurant is a cosy homage to New York and has a collection of interesting photos and posters from the early 1900. The Statue of Liberty artwork on the wall as you come up the stairs finishes of the decor perfectly.
When we arrived we were greeted by a smiling waitress who showed us to our seats, the chef, who I later discovered is the new owner, came out from the kitchen area and greeted us and gave us our menus. The waitress then opened our wine and took our order; it was all done in such a friendly easy manner and put my friend and myself in mind of a friend’s dinner party.
I ordered the Potato Skins with a spicy sauce and my friend had the mussels. Both dishes came out in good time and tasted fantastic, the mussels were cooked to perfection and the home made spicy sauce with the potato skins was a perfect accompaniment to the potato skins.
For the main course we both ordered the sirloin steak with pepper sauce, mine medium rare and my friends medium. Again the meal came out in good time and both steaks were cooked to perfection, I am very particular about how my steak is cooked but I was extremely impressed. The pepper sauce was home made and just the perfect consistency and had an amazing taste it accompanied the steak perfectly.
We both finished the meal with the chocolate dime cake with was a real indulgent treat but was a great way to finish the meal.
It has been a long time since I have had such a good meal out with good attentive service. The chef, Kevin, came out after we had finished our meal and made sure we had enjoyed it and had a chat for about 5 minutes with us, it is so unusual nowadays to get the sort of service we received at New York Steam Packet. I will definitely be returning soon.

Took my folks here a few months ago, having been for my own birthday last year - I love this restaurant, the food is fantastic (and despite the menu being small, it has something for everyone).
We all had the moules followed by steak and then Dime cake - Jim was listening when my dad said the mussels were the best he'd had and produced an extra serving for free!
Mum and Dad are a little hard to please, but they were so impressed, I know for a fact they've been back with their friends since.
I can't recommend this place highly enough!

Jim (owner and chef) personally greets all visitors to this great little hideaway in the centre of Edinburgh.
Bring your own bottle or cans of beer, sit back, relax and enjoy the atmosphere of a wonderful little bistro with prices that will not break the budget.
The menu is great with something to suit everyone. The prices are fantastic for food which is well prepared and cooked in the city centre of Edinburghl Would personally recommend the Moules followed by Peppered Steak. Be prepared to leave this fantastic little place with promises of returning. You will!!
It's just a shame Jim has not made an honest woman of his head waitress yet - we are all holding our breath......Great food, great ambience, great service, and you will go back with friends, colleagues or family.

I eat here whenever I fancy mussels, steak and chocolate and have never had issues with booking. The do operate on a two sittings system, so you do need to eat and go in 2 hours - never a problem for us! Food is great, atmosphere is great and it's BYOB. Even the toilet is fun!
