I have been visiting this restaurant for years now, the food is awesome, pizza is proper and authentic and the service has always been fantastic! If you looking for a fancy stylish place then it maybe isn't for you but if you looking for great food, lovely service and value for money then this is the place to be!! Love their half and half option too.... Go for half lasagne and half pizza fantasia! Its a winner! Hungry just thinking about it! Mmmmm.

AFTER READING THE PREVIOUS REVIEWS, PLEASE NOTE I AM NOT A COMPETITOR I AM (or should i say WAS) a CUSTOMER!!!
Met my son for lunch, took him to the Jolly as I THOUGHT it had a good reputation?? The waiter was on the telephone when we entered the restaurant, did not speak to us, just used his hands to direct us to a table, (whilst still on his phone). DID NOT SPEAK A WORD, very rude!! As if we were doing him a favour by being there.
This restaurant decor was filthy and has obviously not been freshened up for many years . . . please check out the skirting boards and toilets. This worried me as if this is what is on display, I do worry about the kitchen that we cannot see.
I was really disappointed as we did not have time to find another restaurant as we were on a timescale (lunch), and as this was on Edinburgh's top list, I thought maybe the food would be great despite the state of the interior.
We were given a menu with a multiple choice of pizza, pasta, tinned fruit cocktail, at a low price.
We ordered our meal, which I have to say came out rapido, but it was like pasta shells in tinned tomatoes, with stonebaked pizza that you would need a samurai sword to cut! the tinned fruit cocktail, however was pleasant, as to be expected! VERY disappointing experience, would prefer Greggs a couple of doors down.

ideal for lunch with a surprisingly good selection [over 25 dishes] on the £5.70 set menu. For an even greater variety you can go half pizza half pasta for no extra xharge and thats what we did. Good helpings or should we say the posher portions?
This has been a city legend and favorite for almost 50 years and is as popular as ever.
The wood burning pizza oven may have a lot to do with this as you have to go a long ,long way to find anything comparable.

The lunch time deal is excellent. Just over £5 for three tasty courses, and many pensioners take advantage.
The atmosphere in the evening is blue collar and charming. Many of the main items e.g. chicken, salmon and veal are delicious, but the vegetables are mediocre (e.g. chips, chips and more chips) and the pizza toppings are not as generous as they might be,
The proprietor Vito is a great friend to everybody and the two waiters (Bijay and Joel) and the young waitress are very helpful. However the atmosphere is sometimes seriously affected by the attitudes of the hard nosed older waitresses, one of whom blames her language difficulties on her customers.
But I have spent many absolutely jolly times at Jolly's!

the jolly is a simple cafe/restaurant it is not trying to be an overpriced average food serving restaurant like the itailans up the road or down the road, it is a traditional very cheap friendly restaurant and the pizza's are the finest i have ever tasted and so cheap compared to over priced places like la favourita, the thing i like about the jolly is they remember theyre serving pizza's not fillet steak and dont charge you an arm and a leg it's not a fancy restuarant but it's a friendly charming little place where the taste of the food is the most important thing

As for the staff, all very friendly and can I just say, keep your eyes open for Kelly, she is absolutely gorgeous!

I feel like I can firmly say that I ate the best meal of my life at The Jolly Restaurant. The chicken a la crema was so flavorful and delicious and I could not get enough. The staff was friendly and had our meals out to us in a timely manner. truely a great experience worth repeating.
