Britannia Spice

This classy Indian restaurant has a great reputation throughout Edinburgh for better than average cuisine of a spicy nature, so after a strenuous (!) afternoon of shopping at the nearby Ocean Terminal shopping centre, my mother and I decided this was definitely the moment for a curry with matching, tasty nan bread.
As my mother and I are both pretty indecisive people when it comes to choosing anything from a menu that has more than one thing on it, the helpful waiter chap recommended quite a few dishes for us. We went for the Murgh Masallam and actually, I think the other dish was a good old Tikka Masala, which I know is a pretty unadventurous dish to go for, but it tasted so good. Add some garlic nan bread and pilau rice, and you have yourself one awesome meal.
Aptly, being near the water and the Royal Yacht Britania, the restaurant's interior is very nautical, with a lot of blue and sail decoration on the go, so you do feel like you could be eating in someone's large yacht. I should also add that not only does Britannia Spice offer Indian food, it also has a range of Bangladeshi, Nepali and Thai cuisine on the menu.

my partner had been told if in edinburgh you have to visit britainia spice for a curry, I have to say i think a tesco value pour over jar sauce would be tasted better. Most definatly the worst and most expensive lunch we have ever had, stay well clear if you like good food.

In a nutshell – I had the best curry I’ve ever tasted at Britannia Spice! My partner and I decided to treat ourselves and head out for a meal – one of his colleagues loves Britannia Spice and goes there every week so we thought we’d give it a try. It is situated just opposite the Omni Centre, so there were tons of buses we could catch – handy. The weather was awful – snowing and force 10 gales! – but we were welcomed at the door by a really friendly waiter and shown to our table. It was fairly quiet (for such a large restaurant) but that suited us fine as we were just wanting a relaxing night away from it all. The wine list was good and not too expensive – we ordered a bottle of the house wine which is Britannia Spice branded. A nice touch we thought. Anyway, onto the food! Britannia Spice offers four different cuisines – Indian, Thai, Bangladeshi and Nepalese – so we decided to do a bit of mix and match. I had the Tom Yum soup to start (a Thai fish soup that was full of prawns and absolutely delicious). Allan had a chicken tikka kebab, which was really well marinated and the meat was tender and succulent. We then went onto main courses and had a North Indian Garlic Chicken and a Shaktora Gosht to share, along with pilau rice and a garlic nan bread. The Shaktora Gosht is a Bangladeshi lamb curry – quite spicy but really fresh tasting. The meat was literally melting away from my fork. The Garlic Chicken was super garlicky but had a good kick of green chillies too – just how we like it! All in all, I can’t fault the meal, and the service was excellent too. The bill wasn’t that bad either – under £50 including wine and tip for two of us. We’ll definitely be making this our new favourite Indian restaurant in Edinburgh – I suggest you do the same!!
