Classics Restaurant

The signs were all pointing towards a disappointing experience - wall mounted speakers wafted the Titanic theme (saxophone cover), The Exorcist theme, and Vangelis Chariots of Fire; a menu which tried to pander to all tastes - serving Scottish cuisine alongside Indian and South Indian; holes in the leather seats, uncovered nails; yet I held my reservations until the dining experience was over.
And the dining experience was, like the choice of music, horrific, and, like the interior decor, bland, careless and tasteless. The Sag Paneer was extremely bland and a sickly yellow, the lamb with coconut speciality was remarkably bland, the meat closer in texture to mutton, and drowned in a runny brown slurry.
The tasty mango lassi, the perfectly alright popadum starter and a friendly waiter, sadly cannot plug all the holes in this sinking ship of a restaurant - accepting that a single visit is not sufficient grounds for full evaluation of any restaurant, I daresay I will not be making a return visit to see if this was an anomaly.

Restaurant put on a special valentines dinner at an amazing price of £10 per person. The owner advised he had done this to try to entice people in...as they had only been open 8 months. I have to say it was lovely. Had a really nice night. Very spacious, clean & a lovely ambiance. The food was really tasty and very authentic - I will definately be returning.

great food and service. Very Good south Indian selections like Dosa, Idili, Uttappam, Vada etc: After living in Edinburgh for over 11 years finally found a great restaurant to be with family. Must coment that they are very child friendly. I wish them all the best....

Even after reading a bad review i took a courage to visit classic's. I must comment the excellent service and tasty authentic Indian meal. I am a great curry fan and I must say this was the best meal I had in Edinburgh. The meal took a bit longer but as the menu introduction says all the dishes are made fresh from scrach. The guy served me was very chatty and knowledgable. I would recomend all the readers of this site to visit Classics

My first and last (hopefully) experience of this resturant was at the company Christmas lunch organised at Classics.
Food was less than mediocre. Each curry had only 2 tiny pieces of chicken/prawns in it and each table was sitting at least 9 people. Most curries were the same but with different meat. Dessert was an unusual india dish called carrot halwa but looked like parsnip mash,.
Service- Awful service to say the least. We went for lunch and ended up having dinner because they just weren't ready with the food. However, I think that they were just pushing their drinks through to make an extra buck.
Value for money- The dinner itself was 23 pounds. Similar meal (and better quality) would have not cost more than 17-20 and on a large scale, less than 15. I think it was a complete rip off.
Atmosphere- The restaurant was quite big but one it was the basement and secondly had quite substandard loos.
I will never like to set foot in this establishment again. I think they give most Indian places a bad name by their bad service and awful food.

I've been to Classic Restaurant on a few occasions now and really think that it's a bit of a find. It's a bit tucked away and the only reason I found it was due to an A-board on London Road. I went along and had a look at the menu and was pleasantly surprised to see that they served a good selection of Indian food (including some unusual dishes) plus a healthy choice of European staples. This made it an ideal choice for taking a big party as you never get a situation were everyone like Indian! However, I needed to try it first. The first time I went on my own and had a very tasty lamb dish called Travancore lamb curry with lemon rice. It was was very tasty and in more of a gravy than a rich sauce. They very generously brought me some chicken kebabs free of charge and they were ultra succulent! I booked it for a bigger party and I have to say, we were all very pleased and very stuffed! I had chicken pakora followed by Nilgiri gosht with lemon rice, a side dish of hara dal and a couple of chapathis. It was fantastic! Washed it down with a pint of Cobra ... smashing! And it didn't break the bank especially when they gave us 10% off! It's a very quiet place but I sincerely hope that businss picks up as it's very good.

Six of us went for a dinner at Clasics restaurant last week. The menu had fantastic choices from south, north indian cusines and European. That was a great help because one of our friend was ot a great fan of Indian food. The European selection was fantastic. It had a bit of everything. Salmon, Steak, Fish and Chips and surprisingly Bangers and Mash. Indian Cusines was more authentic than any otherIndian restaurant we have tried. The service was excellent. The guys explained us about everything and made our dinner special.
I will definitely recomened Classic's Restaurant to everybody
