Friday, June 08, 2012 - I found myself struggling with the sheer quantity of food. A tasting menu should be about tasting, not stuffing. Having said that, I suspect most customers won't be eating like that, and they're right not to do so. The level of cooking is so high that it's a pity not to be able to enjoy it through sheer fullness. A risotto of spelt, the perfect yielding but resistant texture, came with cubes of ox tongue and veal heart, both slow-cooked and then fried crisp. This was a big, meaty, umami-rich dish, satisfying and thoroughly thought-through. After that came a piece of halibut, crisp on the surface and moist beneath, on brandade and, below that, tapenade: fishy, salty, emphatic, unctuous.

your comments review this restaurant

We visited this restaurant two weeks ago and it was a totally wonderful experience. The meal was for a special occasion (an anniversary) and as soon as we arrived, the staff congratulated us on our anniversary and there was a card waiting for us on the table from the owner and the staff, again congratulating us on our anniversary. What a lovely touch.

We opted for the taster menu and accompanying wine sample menu and the food was exceptional. Each course was expertly explained to us by our waiter or waitress and the sommelier who bought the accompanying wine was equally as informative. The food and wine were both of a very high standard and we both thoroughly enjoyed every course.

The service we received was also outstanding, we had a minimal (but just the right amount) wait between courses and the service staff were friendly, attentive and thoroughly professional. The setting is also very pleasant with good decor and lighting and a relaxed atmosphere.

Value for money wise, this was not a cheap meal, but considering the standard of food and wine and the fact that we had eight courses and five courses of champagne and wine (and an optional port as well, just to be greedy!) I would say that the meal represented good value for money.

If you looking for somewhere to go for a special meal, I could not recommend Castle Terrace highly enough. We will definitely return!
